Long Beach Old Guy Skimboard Barney Fest

No matter how long you skimboard, the first time back every year you can’t help but feel like a barney. Especially when you are sporting a camera on your head. Skimboarding is by far the best surfing substitute when the waves are crap. The one I’m riding here is an old school classic woody (hammerhead) I got on Maui when I was 14 (1991). It definitely stood the test of time – I’ve ridden it a lot every summer since then and it still works pretty good. I made this song on a bunch of old drum machines and samplers, along with an analog modeling synthesizer.

Skateboarding is fun, even when you are old and sleepy.

Groggy morning session at my neighborhood supermarket bank. Spring 2011. There were supposed to be waves, but then it went flat.

Winter Surfing in NH

Cold water, but hardly anyone around. Surfing in New Hampshire, Winter 2011. I got it alone for an hour or so until a few other guys showed up. The song is an old b-side from an unreleased dub record I did years ago. The board is a 9’4 CC Rider.

Powder Turns in the City

Hiking is way more fun than $80 lift tickets. Especially in Boston MA, right next to my apartment. This was my own private snowboard zone for 4 years, until some weak film crew (mostly skiers?!) colonized, built, filmed, and then decided to kill all the hits that were too “dangerous”, so “nobody would get hurt”. Luckily, it dumped a couple of feet over the next few days, and nobody showed up but me and some super amped townie sledders who were launching into the street blind. The big snow pile they shoveled all the hits into was actually kind of helpful to bulid a runway to the way more fun, and steeper landing having drop to the right of where they built their hits. ? I created this song using DP4, a guitar, and a bunch of vintage outboard drum machines and samplers.

Jersey Barrier Sequence

Layback boardslide fakie on a jersey barrier

A frame-grab sequence of the only actual trick in the “Old and Broken Merlyn” video, a layback boardslide fakie on a jersey barrier, right near South Station, Boston, MA. Guess who threw their back out doing this on another jersey barrier recently. I never learn.

Even when you are old and broken, it’s still fun to skateboard.

I made this video while skate commuting to work from Charlestown to the South Station area in Boston, MA – Summer 2010. Coming off a super lame back injury, and feeling pretty old and broken, skating to work totally helped me get my legs back. The title of the song is “Pink Motel”, a semi-live performance using turntables, sampler, drum machines and keyboard (I fixed a few little pops and craps here and there on the computer).
